New Horizon School Westside (NHSW) is a private, independent, Islamic School. The school was established by the Islamic Center of Southern California in 1995. We offer a preschool program for children 24 months and older, and an Elementary program for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade. Our hands-on and project-based learning approach represents a blend of best practices drawn from progressive, developmental, and traditional educational philosophies and is designed to prepare students for success in the 21st century. Elementary instruction hours are from 8:30am to 3:30pm. Students are expected to arrive on campus by 8:20 am. Extended daycare hours are from 3:45pm to 5:50 pm. The school also offers a variety of after school enrichment programs.
We have a unique drop off/pick up procedure to ensure student safety. Students are dropped off at the alley gate between Missouri Ave. and Nebraska Ave. or at the Sawtelle Blvd. gate. Each day, designated faculty and staff pick up each student from their parents’ car and escort them inside the school facility. At dismissal time, each student is released to their parents at the parents’ car. Parents MUST sign their children in and out of school every day using the Brightwheel app.
No. Parents are expected to provide students with snacks and a nutritious lunch everyday. The school offers a snack stand and students may purchase snacks throughout the day. For your convenience, NHSW has contracted with various caterers to deliver meals to the school. Parents may pre-order meals from the monthly hot lunch order form at the beginning of every month.
Yes, all elementary students must follow the uniform code set by the school. Details are available at the school office.
The Quranic and Islamic Studies program is an integral part of the curriculum at New Horizon School Westside. The program is grounded in character-building and value-based instruction that allows students to gain a practical understanding of their faith through the teachings of the Quran and the prophetic examples. The process of developing an American Muslim identity is strengthened over the years as students explore their faith with age-appropriate instruction. We offer an Islamic Studies and Qur’an class daily. Our character education program is based on a set of values, one for each month. Students are encouraged to not only to learn about Islamic values but also to actively apply them. Arabic is taught as a second language, and our program offers daily instruction in the Arabic language with the goal of familiarizing our students with the language of the Qur’an.
One of our goals is to expose each child to a variety of subjects and disciplines that leads them to develop an appreciation of the diversity in the arts, humanities, and sciences. As such, students receive instruction in core academic subjects, as well as Arabic, Qur’anic and Islamic Studies, Physical and Health Education, Computers, Library, Music, and Art.
We make it easy for parents to accommodate their busy schedule by providing extended daycare between the hours of 3:45pm and 5:50pm for an additional charge. Homework Club is offered on Monday-Thursday for Elementary students from 3:45 pm to 5:00 pm. We also offer a variety of after school enrichment programs such as Tajweed, science classes, cooking and Spanish.

Yes, all of our staff members have current certification in CPR and First Aid.
We have a campus-wide disaster plan in place, and emergency evacuation maps are posted in every classroom. Fire and earthquake drills are held monthly to practice evacuation procedures with children and staff so that everyone is familiar with the process and their roles.
Yes, our tuition contract is based on annual tuition. For the convenience of our families, we offer the option of making monthly tuition payments. Tuition is due for the full year, regardless of the child’s attendance.
