FAQs

We realize that you may have questions regarding our school and how we serve you and your child. Below is a list of frequently asked questions about New Horizon School Westside

New Horizon School Westside (NHSW) is a private, independent, Islamic School. The school was established by the Islamic Center of Southern California in 1995. We offer a preschool program for children 24 months and older, and an Elementary program for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade.

The Preschool Program seeks to promote the whole child development: Social, Emotional, Cognitive, Physical and Spiritual development. It is based on developmentally appropriate practices, where children learn at their own pace through meaningful play. The program also includes a developmentally appropriate value-based Religious Studies curriculum, with a focus on cultivating social emotional skills and building self-esteem. Furthermore, children are introduced to pre-writing and pre-math skills to prepare them as they transition to TK and Kindergarten.

NHSW offers a half-day and full day Toilet Training Program. The program provides a consistent approach to toilet training based on encouragement. Our goal is to provide children with a nurturing and caring setting that motivates them to take the first step towards their independence. Daily activities focus on exposing children to a group setting and laying the foundation for social and emotional development.

Yes, NHSW is accredited by the California Association of Independent Schools (CAIS) and the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Maintaining these accreditations allows the school to be officially recognized for achieving and adhering to a high standard of academic quality and ethical conduct set forth by these independent agencies. For additional information, please visit http://www.caisca.org and http://www.wascweb.org.

Our policy is implemented with the best interests of all children, parents, and staff members in mind. We expect students to be in good health and be able to participate in our group care program. If a child becomes sick, we will notify the parents immediately. We request that the child be free of fever, cough, runny nose, diarrhea, or vomiting for 24-hours before they return to school to minimize contamination.

Yes, our tuition contract is based on annual tuition. For the convenience of our families, we offer the option of making monthly tuition payments. Tuition is due for the full year, regardless of the child’s attendance.

Yes, all our staff members have current certification in CPR and First Aid.

We have a campus-wide disaster plan in place, and emergency evacuation maps are posted in every classroom. Fire and earthquake drills are held monthly to practice evacuation procedures with children and staff so that everyone is familiar with the process and their roles.

We have a unique drop off/pick up procedure to ensure student safety. Students are dropped off at the alley gate between Missouri Ave. and Nebraska Ave. Each day, designated faculty and staff pick up each student from their parents’ car and escort them inside the school facility. At dismissal time, each student is released to their parents at the parents’ car. Parents MUST sign their children in and out of school every day using the Brightwheel app.

We make it easy for parents to accommodate their busy schedule by providing extended daycare between the hours of 3:15 pm and 5:30pm for an additional monthly charge. We also offer a variety of after-school enrichment programs each trimester.

Our Annual Giving Campaign requires 100% parent participation. Together with our community members, donations help us bridge the gap between tuition fees and our non-profit program expenses. We host a yearly Spring Gala fundraiser and proceeds are used to support our annual expenses, Tuition Assistance Program and Teachers’ Professional Development.

It is normal for children to experience some form of separation anxiety, especially if this is their first school-going experience. We gradually introduce new children to the program so that each child becomes comfortable in the new school environment. We help each child build a trusting relationship with his/her teacher. If needed, we may ask parents to be available in the first three days to help with the transition to school if needed.

Parents receive information from the school in several ways. Teachers fill out a daily update on the Brightwheel app with a summary of the child’s day, such as mealtime and naptime, as well as other activities. Parents receive a detailed developmental profile report for their child at the end of every trimester. A parent-teacher conference is scheduled to discuss the child’s progress twice a year. Parents also receive a weekly newsletter from their child’s teacher with classroom news and events, and a weekly email message from the office every Sunday to inform them of schoolwide events and deadlines.

One of the best ways to find out about our great school is to take a tour of our campus, meet our staff, and see our learning environment. We encourage parents of prospective students to visit our facility and see our classrooms. School tours take place by appointment only. Please contact us at 310-231-6092 or email us at info@nhsw.org to schedule a tour.
